Natural History Museum, High Street Colchester Essex CO1 1DN

At the end of the High street in Colchester, opposite the War Memorial at the entrance to Castle Park, there is a church. But the Church is not a Church, it is Colchester's very own Natural History Museum. "Or the stuffed animal place" as my son calls it. It's free entry so great on a rainy day to stick your head in, looked at some stuffed animals and try to get out without buying something from the shop (impossible). During the school holidays they often have events on. Last year we went and touched some snakes and today they had a 'BIG BUG EXPERIENCE'. Or 'My Worst Nightmare Experience'.

You have to get your name down early for these things as they always seem to sell out and as any parent knows, there is nothing more frightening than a disappointed child if you can't get in. We managed to get onto the third session of the day and it was excellent. Again, its not hugely advertised (shame), so keep your eyes peeled for future events on their website. Definitely one not to be missed.

The Bug Guy.

Terrible picture of a Stick Insect with red wings. Think you had to be there...

Huge Cockroach!

Massive Millipede.

SCORPION!

Gargantuan Stick Insect on my sons' head.

And for the finale, A Tarantula on the leg.
